Fluid Motion Architects
The Fluid Motion Architects set up in 2004 by Catherine Spiridonoff and Reza Daneshmir, both graduates of the Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran, distinguished itself from mainstream architecture from the very beginning, by its difference in outlook and its modern philosophical thinking. Later they added the department of R & D, named iRODE Group, in 2008. The turning point in the professional career of the two architects came in 2008, when they executed their first large-scale project, the Mellat Cineplex — inventing new spaces and creating structures influenced by non-Euclidean geometrical principles. The design brought them to the forefront of Iranian architecture.
“Straightforward”, “devoid of reference” or “show-off”, “challenging” and “complicated” are words often used to describe the characteristics of their unpredictable designs. Their works have been published worldwide, such as in “The Gaurdian” newspaper (October 24, 2017, London), “L’Express” magazine (May & June 2018, Paris), “Architectural Guide, Iran” (2017, London), “Architectural Design” (No. 271, May & June 2012, London), and etc. Moreover, a short video has been produced about one of their most challenging projects, Valiasr Mosque, by “The Associated Press” in 2018. Mastery in creating complex models and producing diagrams, an awareness of the capabilities of contemporary construction technology, all underpin the architectural and visual creativity of this couple, and helped to turn their works into influential oeuvres.
Philosophy
We are living in a world of forces and waves, the waves that are constantly radiated and influence the environment while being influenced. There is no fixed point in the universe. As Heraclitus puts it everything is continually changing and moving in every second. This movement and change is perpetually in progress in all inner and outer dimensions.
To be sensitive to these waves-which are being radiated with their specific wave length and hence their specific effects - and to demonstrate them, requires the invention and utilization of systems that are capable of upholding them in flexible and cohesive structures without loss of energy, while redirecting them to form more effective currents.
Architecture has the potential to detect, direct and record these waves within a specific time related process and yield a space which articulates the association between large scale issues of urban space, universe and history in a broader setting.
We just have to observe the nature and flow of the wind, clouds and rain - which have reached us from thousands of kilometers away - affecting our environments with their massive forces. These seemingly routine and ordinary events that are usually ignored, remind us of the mutual influence of forces in our world.
Catherine Spiridonoff
graduate of Iran University of Science & Technology, is an architect, researcher, theorist, painter and university professor. She worked throughout her studies in a number of capacities gaining valuable experience not only in design but also in management, organizational structure and professional culture. In her firm's work, she strives to achieve high quality architecture which respects human need and uses, maintaining and expanding cultural values.
Reza Daneshmir
